How to do a weathered, beachy painted finish

 

I finished my chair transformation, and I am quite happy with it.

   

I t has the beachy, weathered look of an old wooden boat that I was going for, and is light without being stark.  It also won’t show the kid’s dirty hand marks, which is very important in our house!

Here is the original chair, and then with base coat and two coats of white.

     

After sanding lightly I applied a light coat of grey (also left over housepaint) which I then wiped off, leaving a little in the grain of the wood and at the edges.  This is a different ways of adding a rustic feel to the normal sanding through to the wood underneath.

 

        

You can wet your cloth and wipe off as much grey as you like. Once you have your desired effect, seal the whole chair with a clear sealer – I used a clear satin water based estapol.

Then it’s time to recover the seat, if you have one.  I used an old denim skirt from the thrift shop ($1 – hence the seam down the middle) cut roughly to size, and then attached the fabric with a staple gun.

   

So now I have to do the other chair, and a table, to match.  We (me and my helper) have already started on the table.
