The Scary 500th Post & Why I Blog

I haven't posted for a few days. Why? Because I realized I had done 499 posts on my blog, and this next one was to be post 500! But what to write about? This question has been going around in my mind, so much that I haven't posted anything! I mean, really, why do I even blog?

And then my eldest son popped in for a visit (and some driving time with Dad before his test next week), and I remembered why I blog. Mainly for my kids, so that if I drop off the perch they will have something to remember me by (that can't be fought over, destroyed or lost), and also for my husband, so that I don't bore him silly with all the crazy research I do into 'old stuff.' And of course for me - it's a way to keep my thoughts in order and share some of the things I find out about history and the vintage way of life, and the things I love. It's also how I store the vintage patterns I find (and ads on my tumblr blog), and remember the books I read. Obviously, despite the link to my Etsy Store, I do not blog to make money.  Although.....

When my son arrived the girls and I were just about to watch the midday movie - "The Red Shoes", a 1948 technicolor movie with Moira Shearer - old, with ballet and music, and in color - sure to please!  "And I'd remember Moira Shear from what other movies?" my son asked.  Of course my memory is terrible, which is another reason I write everything down, but I was able to say, "Oh, here, I've written a post about her," and handed him my laptop.

He was actually impressed, "wow Mum, you get comments and everything, it's like legit." High praise indeed!  So now he, like my other children, knows he can go to my blog and enter a search term, and chances are if it's about history, design or housework, I've written about it.  And if not, I probably will one day.

Just for the record, here are my stats and information you might find interesting -

So, although I don't really blog for a wider audience, some people do visit, and and I have found lots of people I like to think of as friends through blogging. (You know who you are!)

And if you do enjoy reading my blog, or learn something from it, or have any questions, please leave me a comment or message me. I would love to hear from you.

Now I'm off to joint a few chickens....Hmmm, maybe I should do a post about that for the kids future reference.

  1. I blog for me first and foremost. I spend 95% of my time at home with anxiety and homeschooling 4 kids with special needs. It keeps me sane. When I stop blogging (like I am currently) I go insane. I love your blog and really should comment more as really do appreciate all your research. It is so fascinating.

(((hugs)))) keep blogging for you and for me.

    1. Thankyou dear friend - yes , I think blogging keeps me sane too! I know you are out there, and commenting can be tedious sometimes, especially when that test code thing stuffs up. I don't comment much on yours, I know, but I read them as they pop up on my phone. One day I;ll make it to Melbourne and visit xx

  2. Congratulations, Deb! 500 posts is a milestone of which you can be proud. I reached that mark last November. People blog for a variety of reasons but my motives are closely aligned with yours. 65 years into my journey I want people to know and appreciate that which I found to be of value along the way. I want to preserve and protect the legacy of the Ettlines, the husband and wife who operated the Shady Dell over a span of nearly 50 years, hosting thousands of teens and shaping young lives. I blog because I seek sincere friendship with people no matter where they live or what their age or background. Some people blog with the purpose of finding clones of themselves because it allows them to feel comfortable. I take the opposite approach. As I see it, the less we have in common the better. Blogging is an opportunity to stretch beyond the comfort zone, to teach and to learn, to meet people in far away places and bring them closer. Blogging at its best is an opportunity to promote peace, love and understanding around the world.

I love Moira Shearer and remembering studying her classic The Red Shoes at college in a course on the history of cinema.

Once again I salute you for this achievement, Deb. Your posts reflect a considerable amount of research and offer volumes of interesting and useful information. Well done, dear friend! I am also delighted to have you as a new friend and hope you feel the same about me.

    1. As usual you have left a wonderful comment - and yes you are a dear friend. I doubt I will ever make it to Florida, or back in time, but you help me go to both places, sometimes both at once! Of course if you ever make it to Aus there is always a spare room here - my bit for world understanding (if not peace)! Preserving a legacy is a great reason for blogging - I love to share the ads and articles I own and find, otherwise I fear they may be lost forever. Hopefully soon I will get some old family photos and post them too.
Thanks for visiting, and you'll be happy to hear the weather has been fine this weekend xx

  3. I just found your blog. You're AUSTRALIAN!!! Yay!

I'm sitting here in drizzling Canberra researching (for my own nerdy benefit), 1950s households. I love war-time Australia and Britain, but am looking a little ahead now in my research to the 50s and 60s. My interest lays in 'the homefront' so to speak. What we ate, what we earned, how we spent our earnings, what we ate, how we cleaned house :-)
    LOVE this blog!

    1. So lovely to hear from a new reader - and an Aussie! If you look at my tumblr blog you will see lots of ad about the homefront, 40s, 50s a and 60s. I think old ads give a great idea of what we did with our time and money - somehow more realistic and less 'buy this to be cool' mantra these days. I think I am doing 40s stuff at present, but if you scroll back into the archive there will be 50s and 60s stuff. cheers, Deb xx

  4. I absolutely love your blog and have genuinely missed not reading it. Congratulations on reaching your 500th post that's amazing! You definitely deserve the praise you got from your son and that's amazing getting that many page views. I'm looking forward to immersing myself in your lovely little corner of the internet once more! XxxX http://thesecondhandrose.blogspot.co.uk
